Spiegelman even draws scenes in Maus of himself with the tape recorder he used to record Vladek’s story so that he could write the story precisely in the way it was told. Spiegelman had to consistently help his father remember to tell of his experiences in order, because he wanted to write it down in just the way Vladek describes. Spiegelman has to ask him to continue telling about the end of 1941. ![]() On page 84 of The Complete Maus, the first panel drawn shows Vladek beginning to tell a different part of the story, skipping forward to 1943. Memory is often not recalled chronologically, and his father kept skipping forward on the timeline of events. Later in the video, he mentions the struggle of receiving Vladek’s story chronologically.
